Although the title of the article - Golf Words That Must Go - suggests it's all about golf terms, it's not. I think most here will enjoy the article.

I think Mr. Hewett is dead on with "each and every one" of them.

I disagree with him on "holes-in-one/hole-in-ones". Other than that I think he was just being silly and filling up his 600 words for the issue.

PS. I sold my clubs last week - it's a stupid game.

You advocate "hole in ones"?

My boss is given to saying, "it is what it is". But generally she is just accepting that the data says something that upper management doesn't want to hear. Like, "Well, performance looks really bad but, hey, it is what it is. What are you going to do?" (To which I reply, "That depends on how much they will give me to fudge numbers." [wink] )

And I have a special place in my heart for that saying because my maternal grandmother used to say (as a joke), "It is what it is and it ain't no is-er".

Thanks for the link, Cajun.

It's "holes-in-one", just as the two males siblings of my wife are my brothers-in-law.

Holes in one? Think about it. A hole in one is when you get the hole in one (stroke). If you do it again, you got two holes in two strokes, not two holes in one stroke. So it should be "two holes in two," or two "hole in one," or "you're playing too much golf, go do something a bit more interesting."

A "hole in one" is an object, as in "I got a hole in one". So when you get 2 or more of them, "holes in one" is correct.

I'd say it as "Two hole in ones" and wouldn't attempt to spell it. Saying "Two holes in one" gives me the impression some one has cleared two holes with one shot.

To me it makes as much sense as saying "Threes pointer"

Pinky and the Brain raised a really good point. I like "Two holes in Two", but that's a bit unwieldy.

How about "Holes in Ones"?

Although the strokes are all counted, they are seperated by hole.
So even though two holes, holed with a stroke each, is two strokes, they are counted seperately .... so "I scored two Holes-in-One" would be correct as you have holed each hole with one stroke ....IMHO !!!!!!

You can solve the whole problem very simply.

I had two aces.

Hmmm, in the story that immediately follows, he talks about "Tiger Woods". Shouldn't that then be "Tigers Wood"?

If I got past two holes with a single stroke at each, I'd probably have a third stroke that would put me in the hospital.

Two holes-in-one means I'm buying two rounds for the house at the 19th hole ... could get expensive to play so well.

Would you say I want two 7-ups, or two 7s-up, or two 7's-up or a 14-up?

Give me a whiskey-coke.

Not sure about the 7-Up, but I have no doubt about the whiskey-coke.

I'll take a whiskey-coke....... make that a double!
