Hello. I know that GNU tar is better, but does anybody knows which are the features of GNU's tar over the AIX's proprietary tar. I knew about a limitation of AIX's tar, which truncates the filenames longer than a particular number. I need this to justify the implementation of GNU's tar in our environment.
Thank you.

one on the most valuable function is the capability to use compress options with tar

tar xvzf for gzip xvZf for compress ....

I believe gnu tar also offers the -R recursive option to add files from further down a directory tree.
