Gnome on Redhat Linux

All of a sudden, the Gnome on the Redhat Linux server stop working! After starting the gnome with command 'startx', the desktop appears. However, I cannot do anything on the desktop. There is no menu where I can choose from. Right mouse or left mouse button does not give me any options which allow me to do something. Basically, I cannot start a terminal on the desktop so that I can type something.
Someone pls help!!!!!

Have You checked your logs?

egrep '(fail|error)' /var/log/messages

egrep '(fail|error)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

not sure if these paths are correct for RH.

Any error messages in the console where you run startx?

What did you do prior to this, an upgrade maby?

I do not see any related errors at the logs there.

There is not any error messages in the console when I run startx.

Nope, no upgrade. It became this way after we rebooted the machine. It remains that way since.
