I'm running RH9 with Gnome. On some windows and in some circumstances, I see some yellow, spotted pattern overlayed on some windows or window components. I also see it sometimes when logging in or when windows first come up but then the windows draws stuff over it and looks fine. Here's an example :

Any idea what could be causing this or how to fix it?? It's occurred since I first installed RH9, so its nothing I've changed that's caused this.

This looks like video driver problems. Real funky video driver problems. Does it do this every time it redraws a page?

Yeah, pretty much any time something is redrawn I'll see this pattern first. Most of the time though, whatever is redrawn will then cover it up. I'm actually seeing this on two computers with RH9, both with different video cards (one has a Voodoo2).

If this is happening on two different machines then logic would suggest we look for the common thread. To be brutally honest, that leaves you and RH9. You say that it has been doing this from the gitgo which takes us back to the day of the install. During the install, did the graphics look ok? Generally, if the installer program can't find the correct driver for the video card, it will complain about it and finish the install in text mode. When it came to the part where you can confirm the video card and monitor, I'm gonna guess you pulled the ol' switcharoo and selected something else. You can go back a change the driver by opening the main menu then System Settings, then Display. Click the button to configure the video card and select a different driver.

Thanks for the advice. My home computer has the Voodoo card and I'm pretty sure I chose the correct driver for it, but I'll have to check to be sure. The other machine is our web server at work. It was an old 2cpu NT server that I set up with RH9 to server up our web pages. I have no idea if it has the correct video driver set up, I'll have to do some checking to see what card it has in it.

I just thought it strange that this exact same problem happened on two different machines with two different video cards. Like you said, the only common factors are me and RH9, so I thought I misconfigured some setting in RH and didn't even suspect a video driver problem.

A lot of times you just have to let linux choose the one it's going to be happy with. For example, it wants to use RIVA TNT for mine when there is an STB Velocity 4400 driver sitting right there. If I try to change it, things just start messing up. I've learned to just let it pick the one that makes it happy and when linux is happy, it works and that makes me happy. :)
