Gmail and Outlook Two Factor Authentication

I added a user's gmail account to their Office 365 Outlook yesterday and now their other computer is prompting them for their Gmail password but their (correct) password is not accepted.

I am assuming it goes this way:
In order to add Gmail to Outlook for the first time, you have to enable two factor authentication
You then get an app password
When trying to log into the old computer, the old password is not accepted because it is expecting the new app password

Is this correct?

I have added Gmail to Outlook 365 without 2 factor and it is all ok.
If you go to Gmail.com and check out to see if your password is correct there first.

Wait.......... It's a second (Mac) computer that had been connecting via an older version of Outlook that is now broken. I think it just needs the app-specific password generated and input as the password vs. the real Gmail password that the user had been using.
