Where can I find simple tutorial on how to create an object that has a halo or glow around it? a luminous ball, star etc... I've done a search and can't find anything satisfactory. Thank you.

to do this totally within Flash is easy. Let's do a glowing ball...

1) Create a "ball" graphic with the ellipse tool.
2) On the layer above your ball fill another circle centred in the same place on the stage but about 20% bigger.
3) Click on the outline and delete it so you're left with the fill only.
4) Select the fill, go to the Fill panel and pick "radial gradient".
5) Select the colour you want and fill both of the sides of your gradient with that colour - I know it looks like you've just created a solid fill with no gradient but all will become clear.
6) Select the colour box for the gradient's edge. Go to the Mixer panel and select "alpha".
7) Drop the alpha setting to 0.
8) Select the layer with the gradient and move it so that it's below the layer containing your ball.
9) You're done.

That's really neat! Thanx for explaining so clearly!

Very nice wangbar!

This gotta be the sort of things that one gains with experience or by browsing through postings such as this

Playing around as I followed your steps, I managed to create something with the illution of depth by making multiple layers/circles with gradient color and adjusting alpha ...

KOOL!
