Global Record Alerts....

Hi, does anyone know a way of putting an alert across a group of contacts? I have been asked to put an alert on each contact in a group (over 500), and there's got to be a way of doing this without going into each contact!? I'm guessing that a trigger must intialise the alert, so there must be a SQL table I can update - I can't find which one though? Any ideas?
