some people have complained that the eraser in gimp doesn't work; that it just paints in the foreground colour. This happened to me on a duplicate of the background I had made to retain the original background layer as a backup.
here is the solution;
Right -click on the layer on which you are working in the layers dialogue/toolbox/options panel or whatever it's called.
From the right click menu, select 'Add alpha channel'.
The eraser will work from now on.
