I have an XP pro machine and 2003 server both with gigabyte nics on a gigibyte switch. How come when I copy from one to another network utilization only shows no more than 12% when view task manager. Is there any way to increase this? A 2GB file still took 2.5 minutes to copy. Is this the rest of the hardware that is slowing this down or is something else causing this?I am not expecting 100% since I know there are other things going on that use bandwidth, I was hoping to get at least %50 out of it

I think that you mean 2GigaBIT, not GigaBYTE.

What type of cable are you using? Cat5e or Cat6?

And yes the rest of the hardware could be causing a slow down. We installed a gig LAN for our servers and due to the processers and other hardware we have seen the same performance you mention. I would check the cable as well and have it checked and certified for Gig.

2.5 minutes is slow to copy a 2 Gig file - MAN ARE WE SPOILED

. Begin by making certain the logical connection between workstation and Server 2003 is absolutely right:

See my notes in faq779-4017

. Make the registry changes suggested here. The article is misnamed, as it is not a contention issue per se, but an interframe gap problem common with 100mb to 1gbit connectors under XP and Windows 2003. It is decidely not just an Intel issue as a possible mis-reading of this MS KB might suggest:

. See if the Gigabit router has a firmware upgrade. Many have been updated repeatedly to handle issues

. Same advice for the gigabyte NICs.
