Hi,

My workmate decided that he would try and install a 1GB DDR2 stick of RAM into his Gigabyte 8SIMLH (Rev 3.2) motherboard, even though io expressly told him that it was incompatible.

I don't know if he tried to force the chip in (v. likely), or what(??) however he worked out for himself that it was not compatible (did not fit), tried to reinsert the original 512mb DDR chip and ended up with a beeping computer which wont hit POST.

Has he cracked the m/b perhaps through brute force?

Are there a list of error codes/'beep descriptions' (just in case it is a POST code)?? - I tried downloading the manual but it seems not to have them listed?

Gigabyte Link:

Hmmm. Hoping there is something I can salvage from this..

FYI - The computer sounds as though it spins up, then down, then up, then down, then up, then down (both HDD and Optical Drive - If that makes sense??), then beeps constantly, about 3~4 beeps per second, until I power off the unit.

I have put in a different DDR module which illicits the same response..

I have tried with no mem module and get the same response too..

Any help/suggestions appreciated!

Cheers.

What BIOS does this computer have? You have to look at the beep codes based on that.

I looked a bit myself. I see "Award" in the BIOS for this board when I pull it up in a text editor. Here's the list:

1long, 2 short Video adapter error Either video adapter is bad or is not seated properly. Also, check to ensure the monitor cable is connected properly.

Repeating (endless loop) Memory error Check for improperly seated or missing memory.

1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card.

High frequency beeeps while running Overheated CPU Check the CPU fan for proper operation. Check the case for proper air flow.

Repeating High/Low CPU Either the CPU is not seated properly or the CPU is damaged. May also be due to excess heat. Check the CPU fan or BIOS settings for proper fan speed.

Hi Glenn999,
Thanks for the response,

Repeating (endless loop) Memory error Check for improperly seated or missing memory.

Yep, that sums it up really.

Given that the error/beeps are the same irrespective of whether there is RAM in either of the slots, or none at all then it would seem as though it is not registering any of the ram.

I will try and find a 3rd chip, to ensure that dud ram is not the culprit, though the orig 512mb chip was working fine beforehand.

Assuming the third chip fails the test, would this indicate terminal damage to the m/b?

Cheers.

I would think if the memory worked in another computer, the problem would be that the mainboard either got damaged physically or electrically by trying to put the incompatible memory in it.
