Hi all.I have a older Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 Motherboard with 1gig know good dual channel ram and a know good Athlon 64 4000+ CPU and a ATI AIW 9600XT AGP Video Card. The monitor Displays the start of post boot:
GA-K8NSC-939 F8
Athlon 64 Processor 4000+
Memory Test 1048576K OK
Dual Channel 128bit DDR Dual Channel Enabled
IDE CH 0 Master NONE
IDE CH 0 Slave NONE
IDE CH 1 Master NONE
IDE CH 1 Slave NONE
Then the S_ATA1 Master and Slave Drives NONE

CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR DEFAULTS LOADED
F1: to Continue DEL:BIOS SETUP

Well I press F1 to continue and nothing,Press Delete for BIOS SETUP,Nothing just stays there??? Any Idea's? Is it the BIOS? there are replacement BIOS CHIPS.You have to solder in..Do you guy's think this is the problem? New Battery already, tried to clear CMOS with jumper,no change?Anything else to try? or get a BIOS CHIP? what do you think? I don't want to through the motherboard away, seems to see the CPU and the ram.Thankyou for looking any help you may have.

Oh,sorry I forgot to mention it's out of the case testing also_On the table. Thanks

Hmmmm unusual.
You may be getting close to exhausting all avenues here, I would just try one or two more things.
1 stick of ram only
Pull out the keyboard and mouse
Does this board require the extra P4 power connector connecting? and if so is it?
Known good PSU?
Take out the battery for 10 minutes, use the cmos clear jumper after the first minute.
Any bad capacitors? on the motherboard? or graphics card?
It would help if you were able to swap out PSU/graphics/memory, can anyone loan you parts to use to test.

A new bios chip is not soldered, generally they are a push fit but require a delicate touch to remove/fit without breaking the socket.

are you using an USB Keyboard or are you using a PS/2 kbd?

try another KBD, and if it is USB try a PS/2 and vice-versa...

power supply is good, ram is good, video card is good, using a know good ps2 keyboard,Don't see any bad capacitors, and yes the bios chip is soldered to this board GA-K8NSC-939 REV. 1.0 Board. And it is replaceable by desoldering this bios chip and a new one is available. What are you saying take the battery out ten min.then but it back in with the jumper on clear cmos for one min.then remove jumper? not sure what you mean here?

Paparazi meant:

1. Unplug PC from wall outlet...
2. take out CMOS battery leave out for 10 min...
3. hold POWER ON button for the said time...
4. replace CMOS battery...
5. plug back PC into outlet...
6. restart PC and see if it makes a POST...

if you have any other RAM sticks (from another PC or new) I would try that aswell, the symptom described sounds like bad RAM or HDD/DVD/ROM drive (or cable - should always be unplugged at the mainboard side) that is locking up the BIOS...

tried all of that no change, see's cpu ok,see's different ram no problem, just won't go into setup with F1 or DEL on keyboard just sits there.Done all above suggestions, still just sits there, press DEL or F1 to continue no go.

I noticed where the bios chip is,it's soldered in,and on this board right next to the bios,is a place for a backup Bios? says right on the board.I have a backup bios chip.Needs to be soldered in though.Would I solder a new bios there,or remove the original bios and solder in there? I don't know if there's any pictures of this around so you can see what I'm seeing.(It's a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 REV. 1.0 Board).

the board I have has no BIOS Socket like the picture,It is Soldered on the board. But it does have the space for a backup bios,as pictured. Thanks

Do you have any lights appearing on the keyboard when you power cycle the motherboard? it could well be that you have a controller issue with the PS2 controller rather than anything else.

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Yes,All 3 green lights flash on the keyboard when I push the power button on.CPU fan starts, video card fan starts, monitor turns on,then keyboard Lights flash.Displays what I've listed above, and that's it.Cannot get into setup. No response from F1 key to continue,No response to DEL Key to get into Bios.

I guess now is the time to bread board the mainboard...

take it out of the case, with just the KBD, PSU, CPU, GFX card, and one stick of RAM attached, place it on a non CONDUCTIVE surface, e.g. mainboard box, wooden table top, etc. ...

turn it on by shorting the power switch connector with a screwdriver...

with the above can you now get into the BIOS setup?

if NO then you either have a bum BIOS flash or defective mainboard or CPU... as an educated guess, I would point towards ESD damage to the mainboard...

PS: desoldering the BIOS is by no means an easy task, nor is soldering a new one onto that board... and in lieu of todays prices of mainboards that support that CPU, not worth it in my opinion...
