We are running a gigabit network using cat 6 network cables. We got 12 workstations, one server, all with Gigabit NIC, and 1 gigabit switch.

But we are having problems with our paradox database system, as it is so slow.
We are not sure where's the bottleneck and how to check.

Wondering is there any free software to test the network speed, or any documents or articles for me to read through about the Gigabit on cat6. Or perhaps some advices on what to check.

Any comment will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Froy

If your cable was installed correctly and passed it's certification, then I would think it would be an equipment issue. Obviously, it is the equipment that makes the data run at gigabit, not the cable.

Has your database ever run fast? Google for the software. There is quit a bit that will send data on the net and compute the round trip times.

Ummm, not to be disagreeable, but cable certainly can make a difference in the speed. A poorly terminated cable can cause the switch to step down. An open or poor termination on any of the 8 conductors will cause a drop in speed from Gb to 10/100 or not working at all, depending on which conductor is faulty.

Like franklin said, google for network diagnostic software.
There are many apps out there for you to choose from.

i don't disagree with you Richard, that's I said if it was installed correctly and passed cert. then it is an equipment issue. Obviously it would be a good idea to check the cable, but with the just the one application, at least that is the impression I get, I think the problem is more likely equipment related. I suppose we should ask FROY if the problem is isolated or system wide. This is assuming that ACME Discount cabling or someone like that did not do the job:) The last large cable bid we lost to a company like that. They must have laid 50 miles of excess cable on the ladder trays above the racks. I would have liked to seen the tests on those. Too bad too, because outside of the cable mess, this customer has one of the most impressive equipment rooms I have ever seen. You name, they got it, and probably redundant.

Well, 1st of all, thanks for the comments. To aswer the question, we acknowledge the problem was based on the paradox problem.

Copying big files from one computer to another is fine, we also run another client-server sofware called filemaker, and it's also fine so far. But the thing is that we copied the paradox system to another office with the same amount of data, and it was better (speed and performance) even though we only used 100 Mbps there.

It's really a big headache because we couldn't be sure in anything. So wondering whether anyone has ever had similiar problem with gigabit with cat6.

It's a good idea though, to check through all the cables again. I wasn't around when they did it, and it was somebody else from a cable company who did it. We're going to do that next week, and hope can find something to be blamed on.

And I'll google for the software network test.
Anyone ever have the similar problem ?
