I am understanding that for the Gigabit electrical or fiber interfaces to work, they need to
be configured differently. If that is correct? If my electrical interface operates, does that mean
that my fiber interface would not work. And vice versa, if my fiber connection operates
does that mean my electrical interface would not work. Thank you.

It sounds like you are talking about 'combo' ports where you have a 10/100/1000BaseT Copper (RJ45 UTP) interface and a SFP slot that are the same port. For example on a Catalyst 3560-8PC there is a single Gigabit Ethernet port that has a 10/100/1000 UTP port and a SFP slot both of which are GigabitEthernet0/1. Only one of these can be used at a time.

Cheers
Andy
