I am about to lay in a new network backbone at the business I work for.
The servers (5) all support copper gbic ethernet, as do 12 new workstations.
The 12 stations all access the central server to run point of sale programs.
I recently upgraded them from workgroup hubs to workgroup switches.
Is it neccessary to replace the switches with gbic to ensure plenty of thourougput? Or is it really hard to fill up 100 meg pipes?
There is a total of about 50 computers, all that access various database servers and the internet.

I have about 1000 nodes on my network and my backbone is gigabit, as are most of my servers (about 20) the clients are still 100 meg to the desktop (no building with more than 12 folks is still 10 meg) the backbone does exceed 100 meg sustained, but not all that often, and honestly, it is most often backups, not users.

I seriously doubt any users are out typing 100 meg ethernet, no matter how good they are at Point of Sale.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Ditto what jimbopalmer said. Plus, most workstation busses are going to be able to process fast enough to take advantage of gigabit. At least not yet.
