I'm creating a button image in Photoshop. When I 'save for web' and import my gif files into my flash movie, the images appear blocky. I am creating a button in Flash, and the images appear fine when I edit the button...it's only when I play the movie that the resolution problem occurs.

Any ideas??

This could be due to the size of your movie (visual size not file size). As flash is vector based, when you enlarge the movie, everything within your movie will expand accordingly so you won't get distorted images. The problem with .gif and .jpeg is they are made up of pixels. This means that when these are enlarged/stretched they lose their sharpness. You can use the "trace bitmap" command under the Modify menu to turn your bitmap into a vector but personally, I have never had much luck with this. If you go to the help files they should help you out with settings.

If anyone else has a better view, I'd like to know also. roda B-)

Here is a method I have found that works. Like Roda said...the pixels do get stretched and starts looking blocky. One way to prevent this is to create your gif or jpeg as big as it will be when stretched onto a 17" monitor before importing into flash. Say I have a jpeg in flash that I want to be viewable as 200 wide by 300 long. I would create it at about 400 x 600 in photoshop...save it and then import into flash.

After import, turn the image into a symbol and scale it to 200x300. Works perfectly for me.

You could also create you Flash movie so that it does not stretch and remains the set size regardless of browser or monitor size. This method would allow you to create the jpg or gif at the size you will be using in Flash and will reduce file size. Ya' Gotta Love It!

When you say "after import, turn the image into a symbol "....... Is this without the trace bitmap command? roda B-)

Yes...the trace bitmap from my experience turns out a larger file size than I am willing to live with.

Simply select the image in the library which is where it will import to and drag it to the stage. Select it and Insert/Convert to symbol.

Make sure you do not delete the original image which will remain in the library. It will have a special icon that looks like a tree. Ya' Gotta Love It!
