Hi all,

Got a 2950 connected to a 4506.

There are no errors showing on the fa port that connects to the 4506, however, on the 4506 we are seeing rather a large number of giants in the "Received" under the "show interface" command.

Does this receive mean it has received above mtu size frames from the 2950, or does it mean it has received it from somewhere else and trying to transmit it on this port?

We are getting really slow response times from users connected to the 2950 (Edge switch), but the only errors I can see are on the Core 4506, and these are the giants.

Would this cause severe slowdown issues?

Let me add a bit more onto this if I may....

Would the difference in VLAN be ausing any issues with slowdown.....? Here are the configs of the two connected ports

2950:
interface FastEthernet0/24
description Link to xxxx-Gi2/1
speed 100
duplex full
!

4506:
interface GigabitEthernet2/1
description Link to xxxxxxxx
switchport access vlan 242
switchport mode access
load-interval 30
speed 100
duplex full

Unlikely. But why are they configured differently?
If the 4500's interface is an Access port in VLAN 242, then the attached 2950 interface should be the same.

Anyway, if the link is up and passing traffic then it's not going to pass some and drop some - that must be a different problem.

Get on a host on the 2950 and do a ping from it to a host that is elsewhere on the network. any drops?
Now try the ping with a big packet, say 1600. any drops?
Now try it with a big packet and the DF bit set. do you get the correct "...but df bit set" response?
