Not sure if 'lines' means 'records' but if it does you shouldn't need a formula. Insert a summary (Menu Options: Insert -> Summary Field) that does a COUNT for the group. Make sure the field you summarize is one that is never empty. It will appear in the Group Footer but can be moved to the group header.
If this doesn't give you what you want explain why lines is different from records.
