My GFS failed last friday. The last friday is the monthly tape. GFS failed to find the tape but the March tape was there ready to go. GFS wanted to backup to Feb. monthly tape. How do I get GFS back on track?
Server 2000
ArcServe 9.0

Any help would be great!

Hi,
When you mount your backup tape always make sure that the tape you have mounted is in the scratch set of the daily/weekly/monthly media pool.

I hope you find this post helpful.

These are the rules with media pooling:
When a GFS job kick's off, ARCserve will check the 'scratch set' of the pool belonging to the particular backup job (in your case the Monthly pool). It will seek the oldest media available in the pool, if this media cannot be found, it will go for the second-oldest media and so further on. When none of the scratch media is available in the tape drive or in the tape libraries slots it will accept <blank media> to use for the backup job. If a blank media cannot be found either ARCserve will cancel the job.
You can check the contents of the Media Pools through the Media Pool Manager
hope this helps

regards

I thought that gfs would search for cd_gfs_fri_3/24/05 first then for blank media, thats what the media prediction report says, and then move that media automatically to the scratch set. All the prior months were in the save pool i don't know why it grabbed '''''''2/??/05 and put in the scratch set instead of ''''''3/24/05 ? What is going to happen next year when it looks for ''''''3/31/06 and it's not there? kinda screws up the rotation doesnt it? How & can i get this back on track? Any mod i can do to the Database?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks to GSC & Cyklops !!

Kormi,
In a perfect world this would work flawlessly, but then again the world is not perfect :)

If you have missed a backup in your GFS rotation it might get screwed up. If you had to replace a tape it might get screwed up. There are a lot of reasons for this not to work. After a while when you will see that the tape move from save to scratch set will work again.

Most important is that you make sure that the tapes are mounted and that they are in the scratch set.

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC Thank you for your help. Just as I anticipated, the media prediction report now indicates that this months end tape is:
<< Friday, 4/28/06 11:15 PM >>
Backup Type & Method: Monthly FULL
The following media can be used:
1. M-CD_GFS-FRI- 3/25/05 [S/N:AHR323L1]
2. < BLANK TAPE >
The media will be formatted as M-CD_GFS-FRI- 4/28/06.

Its looking for last years 3/25/05 tape instead of
last years 4/29/05. Is there no way to correct this? besides completely redoing GFS?

A little help o' wizards of backup, send me down the right path of knowledge.

Kormi,
The media prediction report can be manipulated. If you want to use the 4/29/05 tape as a Monthly tape you just have to make sure to move this tape from the save to the scratch set when you're running your Monthly backup.

Also make sure that the tape has not expired.

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC
