getty problem

I have no getty's running....rebooted and nothing. I checked the syslog amd messages file and can't find anything out of the ordinary. I can login using telnet and facetwin, but not from the consolt or modem. I have checked the inittab and re-read the inittab, enable and disabled...any suggestions????
