I have a very old SCO OpenServer Release 5 box that is repeatadly displaying the following error message on the console:

/etc/getty ttya8 o (<date/time>) PID <xxx>
Cannot open line ttya8: No such device or address (error 6)

Space on the / volume is limited and is conctantly filling up which I expect is due to whatever this problem is. A reboot gives more disk space back but it continues to fill up again after the system is brought back up. Not sure where to start. Any help is very much appreciated.

Also,

The /etc/rc2/d/messages/P88USRDEFINE.log is full of entries as below.

/etc/prtset_a6: /dev/ttya6: cannot open
/etc/prtseta6: /dev/ttya6: cannot create
/etc/prtseta6: /dev/ttya6: cannot open
/etc/prtset_a4: /dev/ttya4: cannot create
/etc/prtset_a4: /dev/ttya4: cannot open
/etc/prtseta8: /dev/ttya8: cannot create
/etc/prtseta8: /dev/ttya8: cannot open
/etc/prtset_a6: /dev/ttya6: cannot create
/etc/prtset_a6: /dev/ttya6: cannot open
/etc/prtseta6: /dev/ttya6: cannot create

Does anyone know what might be causing this of how I go about fixing it.

You may consider something like this:
disable ttya8
disable ttya4
disable ttya6

Hope This Helps, PH.

You probably had a terminal port connected to the machine and this has not been removed, or it is still connected but the ports are not working anymore.

The disable PHV mentioned will solve the problem on the short term, but if this is still a production machine you really should look at why this started to happen.

Disabling the effected TTY's has solved that problem and stopped filling the log files. However, one of the Progress databases on the box is now refusing to start with the following error message.

Shared memory in use by another process (1260)

Not sure this is related as I've tried re-enabling the TTY's to see if it fixes it. I'll just have to investigate a little futher.

There are a couple of commands you can use to monitor and manage shared memory:

ipcs (disply shared memory and semaphore status)
ipcrm (remove shared memory or semaphore)

The "ipcrm" is used to remove a shared memory segment. Probably not a great idea if you aren't certain of what you are doing. This is not an area I'm experienced in, I just wanted to pass along the names of those commands.

Check out the details:
man ipcs
man ipcrm

I don't know if this will help, but maybe you can find which process is keeping Progress from launching.
