i am trying to add cells in 123 by column for work shifts (7-3 and 3-11) and i keep getting err for all possible functions. i want to see how many people are working each shift. any ideas?

I was never good at these and it's been a long time since I've looked at them, so all I can do is suggest an idea--
take a look at the functions like dsum and dcount.

Here's an Excel related link with the general idea.

If there is only one line per person in the table and any blank lines are really blank (no space bar entries etc) dcount might do it for you if you can get things set up properly.

Are your registry and data backed up?

Can you provide specific examples with data and the functions?

cell a1 name
cell b1 shift
cell a2 blank
cell a3 one
cell a4 two
cell a5 three
cell a6 four
cell a7 five
cell a8 blank
cell b3 1
cell b4 2
cell b5 1
cell b6 1
cell b7 1

Create the range name PAYROLL a1..b8
Add or delete employees between the blank lines.

cell a13 first shift
cell a14 second shift
cell b13 @dcount(payroll,1,shift=1)
cell b14 @dcount(payroll,1,shift=2)

I've been doing some more work with dsum the last couple of days. I like the way the function works in Millenium-I used to have a lot of trouble thinking through the right way to set up range and criteria information-the ability to make the choice based on the column heading is really nice.

Now if it just had the equivalent to Excel's fixed column width data import ....
