We are trying to get a server backup up that has an incorrect IP address. The server is located in another state.
This is a Sun Solaris server.
If I can get an ALOM connection through NET MGMT can I then get to a command prompt on the box so that I can rename the hosts file?

I am not familiar with ALOM or it's capabilities. I can use a Lantronics connection to get to an ALOM prompt on the box though.

At my age I still learn something new every day, but I forget two others.

I have been looking at their documentation there but unfortunately I have no familiarity with Solaris and little with Unix in general. It references things I am unfamiliar with so I have no way of putting the information into a perspective I can understand without ever having seen this in use.

Assuming the system is correctly configured to access via NET MGMT, could you outline the steps needed to get from logon to a command prompt where I could rename the hosts file?

You want to rename an hosts file with no familiarity with Unix in general ?
Please, ask the sysadmin or hire someone competent.

I run Linux at home. I have never accessed and did not know of the existance of ALOM until yesterday and have been reading up on it. I know how to rename the files but I do not know how to get through ALOM to a point where I can do that.
The server is in Denver two time zones away from me and there is nobody on site that can assist us. The nearest vendor is 10 hours drive away in Utah.

PHV, I have never known you to be insulting or condescending. I am very competent at what I do. I am competent enough to know in this case that I am uncertain as to the steps to get to where I need to be and need to ask.
The server was brought down to switch it to a disaster recovery closed network and the defaultrouter and hosts files were renamed and ones with the DR addresses swapped in their place. Whoever setup the files must have made a mistake or something else is wrong because the server would not come up on the isolated network. Now the files have to be swapped back so we can get it back onto our production network and figure out what went wrong but we cannot access the server from here and have nobody on site.

I use Linux all the time, I am only passingly familiar with Solaris and not at all with ALOM.

Sorry, my intent wasn't to insult you.
I'm not an Solaris guy too and I must confess that I'ven't read the doc.
You may perhaps have better replies in the Solaris forum.

After I posted here I realized there was a Solaris specific forum.
Thanks for the link though.

I think PHV freaked out (like I did) when he read that your plan to resolve this was to "rename the hosts file". It all makes sense now that you've explained it further... :)

Annihilannic.

Agreed - When I saw your first 2 posts my reaction was same - Hire someone that knows what they doing.

PHV was giving what would be a very good advise based just on those 2 replies - good to know that you do know a bit more than what it appeared.
