Hi all,

From time to time, we need to restart apache after the config file is changed, but we don't want to shut down apache when there are live connections.

Is there a way of knowing how many people are connecting to the Apache server at a given time?

You could enable the "Apache status" directive at the end of httpd.conf. This will let you go to a status URL (and you can specify IP addresses that are allowed to do this) and view the number of current connections.

However, if you're waiting for there to be zero connections, you could be waiting a while... I would just bite the bullet and do an "apachectl restart" at a time when the system is likely to be at it's least busy. A the worst, people browsing may just have a slightly longer wait for pages, or maybe get a "cannot connect" message in their browser.

--
