Getting Textinput field data into a token to be passed.

I need to pass data from an input field to another page and thought I would use a token to do it. When I pass the token and the name of the layout field (token.3 = sort_order), on the following page I get "sort_order" not the information in the input field.I am sure it's just a syntax thing.

Any ideas?
