Getting Status of servers with SNMP

Hi!
Actually, in my job we have Netview 5. (Planning to install v6)
Can we customize it, to poll to the servers (NT and Unix) to get the status of the networks cards, to see if the servers are alive, using SNMP (not ICMP) ?
That searching for status, does the manager propagate it in parallel, or secuencially ?
