Hi,

I am moving from programming in CICS/COBOL to Websphere java can anyone recomend any beginner documentation for websphere, anf then any good reference stuff.

Many thanks

FFF

If all you are doing will be programming - then I would suggest learning about core Java principles, then J2EE, then servlets. Most of the O'Reilly books on these subjects (including their "In A Nutshell" series) are fantastic resources.

I would still recommend finding a Sun Java certified course in your area for learning the basics. Object Oriented Programming is a different animal than the procedural experience you've had with CICS/COBOL.

Good luck, and welcome to the insanity [hammer] Einstein47

Thanks for that I try the books, however what about websphere documentation. I dont really understand how the xml, the bits of java and the 'websphere' link up and Icols and Kcols my head hurts!%-)

Are you going to be the WebSphere Administrator? That is a job and a half. IBM has several Redbooks that could be helpful (I found trial by fire very painful).

What OS and version of WebSphere will you be using - it makes a big difference? Einstein47

We are using Websphere 4.1 on RS6000 AIX. I wont be an administrator, but I will write & design the XML for the process flow throught the application panels, and do the Java and JSP's (using visual age java). (I think this is called a learning vertical line)

I am trying to find my way through the red books which I am sure will be helpful when I know what I am looking for :)

thanks for you help

As far as development goes - look into WSAD (WebSphere Application Developer). It is an awesome IDE for creating WebSphere servlets and JSP's. I'm not sure where you get it, but I believe that it is powered by Eclipse. Try for more details. Einstein47

i have a problem starting my websphere server as it is giving me an error service sprcific error 10.

Sukhraj,

Open another thread on this topic please.

Your problem is a stray java process. Kill it in your Task Manager.
