I have been asked to improve a person's site. I've done a few sites in classes in college, but it was set-up for me. The person has thier own domain name, but how do I "get-in" to thier site to see what I have to work with? How can I tell what programs were used to make the site, i.e. dreamweaver, frontpage, etc.? (He doesn't know) Any getting started tips would be great.

Thanks!

set up WS_FTP
you'll need his username, password, and hostname.
download (ftp) the files

if the pages were created in dreamweaver etc. the code will have numerous instances like (for dreamweaver) MM_ starts a function
frontpage places a whole bunch of CRAP in it's code. better know as server extensions. you'll see this tag in the head though
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">

this is a way to transfer all the files form the server to your machine for you to change edit etc..

If the pages were created with frontpage this is however not recommened. you can tell by opening the site in your browser and viewing the source. if the meta tag that I have in my last post is in the head then you should use frontpage to import the site. You of course need frontpage to do this

if the site was written from scratch in a sense. you can ftp all the pages to your machine using a file transfer protocal like WS_FTP
after downloading the program to set it up is simple
create a new connection
what you need is
username
password
host name (
this should ahve been provided when the servioce was established.

the link above will let you download the prgram for evaluation before you have to purchase it.
