hi everyone

we use voip for internal calls between twoo offices that are connected via an mpls cloud. THe voip is done by a card in the pabx system. We want to start to do it for external calls also, we have 2 cisco 2801s. What more do i need, will everyone have to get a voip phone or a headset ??? i need to understand the basics, how does it work?? when someone dials a number, does it hit the router and get sent via the internet?? how does it know to send an external call to the web? will the phone have a gateway??? appreaciate any help i can get

First off, let us know the PABX. That can make all the difference..

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

What model and IOS version of the 2801 do you have?
CME is required....but not sure if your router is capable of supporting this or not.

hey guys
version is 12.4(1c) im sure it is compatible cos the isp sold it to us and they knew we were looking into VOIP.
The pabx is an NEC IP1E-8KSU-A1.

what is CME?? can you give me a rundown of how it would work

phone functionality on the router ??? what does that mean

do i have to use ip phones. im sorry but i dont understand the basics of how it works .... is it by gateway on the ip phones and the router is connected to the pbx . how do the calls get out over the web

So if you want to Send your external calls pass through your MPLS cloud , this job should be done by a gateway .
Most of the time the PABX with and IP enabled Interface handle this job . because it acts as gateway between PSTN lines and IP enabled line.
So the use of router depends on the addressing scheme , which is already managed.

MCSE + Security , CCNA , CCDA , CCNP , CCIE written

but the ip enabled line is private .... we dont have ip phones
