Getting ready for Network+ Exam....

I want to write Network+ in the next couple of days but here are a few questions I have. Don't feel obligated to answer them all:

1. When enabling DNS on Win9x, why do you need to enter the HOST and DOMAIN? Do you need to do this on Win2K (I can't find this setting in Win2K)?

2. Connecting Macintosh and Windows on a network. I've never used a MAC so I'm having trouble understanding how to get MAC and Windows to talk to each other. Please fill in the blanks for me:

Mac, running Appletalk -> Win9x, running NetBEUI:

Mac, running Appletalk -> Win9x, running TCP/IP:

Mac, running TCP/IP -> Win9x, running TCP/IP:

Mac, running TCP/IP -> Win9x, running NetBeui:

I'm confused when to install PCMACLAN or Appletalk on Win9x. And, if I do install them, does this allow Win9x systems to read Mac files or do I need to install DAVE or AppleshareIP on the Mac system? So confused...

3. In a Win9x peer-to-peer network, NetBIOS names are resolved by broadcasting. Do the Win9x systems cache the results anywhere or do they always broadcast (no static entries in the HOSTS file). Do Win9x systems cache DNS entries anywhere?

4. In a Win2K peer-to-peer network, if I disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and have no WINS or DNS server, can Win2K still resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses?

5. Is the program called "NETMON" available on all Windows computers? If so, where? I can't find it.... My book says that NETMON is included with Windows.

6. Do you need a RAID motherboard to implement RAID with a Win2K computer using software RAID?

5. This is what I know about #5. Netmon is not loaded by default. All windows boxes can have the Network Monitor driver installed (you have to add this manually under the local area connection properties). This allows one to connect remotely to the computer and do promiscuous traffic capture (requires SMS version of netmon). Netmon the standard version may be on the windows CD, you just have to install it manually. Or maybe the resource kit. I am not sure here.

Hi,

In reply to your questions

1. The NetBIOS name on Win2K (and NT4 and XP) is the same as entering the host on 9x. You don't need to put this on 9x as it doesn't have networking installed by default.

Domain only required when it connects to a proper NT domain controlled by NT servers setup as such.

2. Connecting Macintosh and Windows on a network.
You will only get Macs and PC's to talk to each other when they are using the same protocol. It's like me writing this in English and you writing in serbo croat - I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of what you were saying.
Thus the two TCP/IP ones would only communicate.

3. Not sure if 9x systems cache DNS responses at all, but it is normally quick to resolve if the DNS server is 'local'

<haven't a clue with 4 and 5>

6. No, you just need identical hard drives. Remember though that software raid will have a performance hit over a hardware controller, either as a PCI card or onboard.

Good luck with the exam.

John

2. if you have one PC is a sea of classic Macs, PC MacLAN will let the PC do Appletalk to talk to the Macs.

If you have one classic Mac in a sea of PCs then DAVE or Mac SOHO will let the Mac do SMB to talk to PCs

OSX has samba built in so it can do SMB without additional software, either as a host or client.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
