Getting "Windows Error Recovery" message on boot

Lately, each time I boot up in the morning, it starts to load up, then shuts down. When I restart the boot, I get a Windows Error Recovery Window that says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change may be the cause." Left alone, a "Startup Repair" sequence begins. It asks if I would like the program to find a Restore Point before the suspected error, but I've refused, since I don't want to lose data. Should I accept this alternative? Is there any other way to fix this problem?
 
You actually should not lose any data just doing a restore, you may need to do some recent updates, but thats it.

OK, thanks for the tip. Next time it happens, I'll accept the option to go to a restore point and, hopefully, that will clear up the problem.
 
Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.


The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is bootable, or that may even run from within Windows, that will thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.
 
There is a chance if you do not pre-empt the next failure, it could be more serious. A system restore does not lose Data, but hopefully will lose the system error that is stopping normal startup.

A check for malware is a good idea. Malwarebytes is often recommended.

I would suggest you also check the installed hardware in device manager in case there is a device failing to load properly. Any devices showing warnings should be checked for updated device drivers. Deleting the misbehaving devices will force their re-installation at next boot.

A utility such as Belarc Advisor will tell you if there are any failed important or critical security updates on your system.

As well as some infection by malicious software, these problems could have come about due to a new driver being incompletely installed from automatic updates, or a failed installation of an automatic software upgrade.
