i can't get Netscape to access the net via my ethernet card to ADSL modem - the preferences section does not have a settings area for connection type. I am using Mandrake/KDE and plan on using the PPPoE client from RoaringPenguin.
i have my "win98 network" going using Samba, and can surf by using KFM (thru analogX proxy)to the win98 box's ADSL connection. This gets me on the net, but of course there is no/little script support, so many links dont work.

Any thoughts on config for Netscape, or other browser ?

If you can surf using Kfm, then you can surf using Navigator. There is nothing in Navigator that specifies "use this network card to connect to the net". Instead, Navigator (and any other network related app) relies upon the OS to direct network packets.

The fact that you can surf using Kfm tells me that your OS is set up OK. So, you do have a Navigator problem, it's just different from what you thought it was... The first place I would look is in the "Proxies" section. Is that set up OK? (Go to Edit menu, select Preferences, click on Advanced, and then Proxies.)

If that looks OK, then try a few simple tests from a command line:

* Use ping to check your connection to a remote site.
* If ping doesn]t work, use traceroute to see how far you get before everything stops.

Let us know how you get on.

--
thanks AndyBo,

dont know how i missed expanding the "advanced" section (groan)i only clicked on the word, not the little diamond, anyways, tried it out and it *really* wants to work, but there is something not quite right yet, now i get a "contacting waiting for reply" (instead of an immediate "server **** not found"). methinks now it is just a proxy addressing/port problem, since once i did get a partial load of a page, but it was not consistant. ping works only locally, and is not making it past the proxy, somewhere the ball gets dropped, weird because KFM will browse, but the same ip/port used for KFM 's proxy setup doesn't work for Netscape. i think i will set up the pppoe client and a firewall and go with a direct connect to see if it is the proxy s/w on the windows machine that is messing me around.

thanks...... i will post how it all goes,

ray436

just to let everyone know, it was the proxy i used, for some reason it didnot handle a dynamic IP reliably, but now i have installed the PPPOE client from roaringpenguin.com and am using my hub, very easy to set-up, i highly recommend it, now my Linux box surfs like it is mainlining.

thanks for your help AndyBo...........Cya

ray436

OK, ray436, now it's my turn :) I am sort of new to linux and trying to setup the following:
I have a computer that has 2 hard drives- one with win98 and the other with SuSE8. It is attached to a hub that has another box running SuSE 8 on it as well as a DSL modem.
Now if I use win98, I can get out on the internet just fine using a pppoe app called EnterNet 300 (win only). My SuSE drive on the same box however (so the hard ware is the same) will not allow me out using Roaring Penquin. I haven't tried the seperarte Suse box yet since it is set up with no X server.
I am, as far as I can tell, using the same setup on both the win98 app and the linux pppoe: same 2 dns servers, same nic card (eth0 on linux) etc.
Any suggestions?
