My department has an Excel spreadsheet (with pivot tables) which holds information on customers and what equipment they are currently leasing from us. I've been tasked with publishing this spreadsheet on our website so that customers can check their records online. We do not want customers to be able to edit the spreadsheet.

I have no idea how to go about this. I've searched for information but without much luck. Does anyone have any ideas or can you point me in the direction of a useful website?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks. Yes, I have tried that but its "not what we're looking for" apparently!

I agree this would probably be the easiest solution but I think my dep't were looking for something more like a HTML table updated from a spreadsheet. Not sure how the pivot table functionality would fit into that... Are they asking for too much?

If I understand you correctly, your department wants a webpage that is created and pulls it's information from a spreadsheet?

Yes thats it - sorry if I'm not explaining myself properly!

Is that possible (bearing in mind pivot table functionality) or should I just try and sell them on the "save as HTML..." option?!

You probably have already read this but just in case.

About displaying Microsoft Excel PivotTable reports on the Web
When you want to make a Microsoft Excel PivotTable report available on the Web, you can either save the report in HTML format and publish it as a noninteractive table, or you can use a Microsoft Office Web Component called a PivotTable list. Users of your Web page can interact with the PivotTable list from their Web browsers, changing the layout and the data displayed.

The PivotTable list component for Web pages is available in the browser only if users have the Office Web Components installed. They can do this by installing Microsoft Office 2000 or, if their company has an Office 2000 site license, by downloading the Office Web Components from their corporate intranet. If users have the Office Web Components, they can view and interact with the PivotTable list by using version 4.01 or later of the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser. Users who don't have these components or who use a different browser cannot view or interact with PivotTable lists. You can publish Excel PivotTable reports to the Web as either as interactive PivotTable lists or as noninteractive tables that can be viewed in other browsers.

A PivotTable list on a Web page has features and commands similar to an Excel PivotTable report, but the list does not have worksheet row and column labels. Help for PivotTable list commands and features is available in the browser, rather than in Excel.

In addition to publishing PivotTable reports as interactive lists, the PivotTable list component can be used to publish interactive versions of worksheet lists of data in rows and columns. You can use PivotTable lists to publish Excel worksheet lists that are filtered, and users of the Web page can also filter the data in the browser.

In office 2k you can save your excel sheet as a HTML file.
Click "Save As ..." and then you can choose HTML from the
options in the bottom dropdown box. BobbaFet

Thanks for your help Mithrilhall. Gives me something to go on.

Cheers

Here's a thought. Use a filereader object to read an excel file that is saved in .csv format (comma-delimeted)

My two cents

You could also try converting to .pdf's or using a Perl script to display the spreadsheet in an html table (on the fly) - this is not uncommon. These are better than saving as html. -gerrygerry
