I was introduced to the free software utility "Belarc Advisor" this week, and installed and ran it. What a great utility, and also a free utility. It produces info that I've not seen any utility capable of producing at one shot.

In the report, it notes that I am missing 3 MS updates/patches for several security areas, I don't know why, as I use auto-updating, and don't think I've missed any of them.

They are

I assume that I should have these installed. What is the simplest way to do this with a minimum of activity on my part?

Is there an MS page I can go to, and have MS double check for missing updates. Or, is there somewhere I can go to just key in these update numbers, and have them installed?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you click on the details link next to the updates listed, it should take you to Microsoft Knowledgebase which will give you info on what the update that misssing is, as well as provide a link somewhere on the page that will take you to the download of that update.

When running programs like Belarc Advisor be aware that some Security type software, for example SpyBot S+D's "Tea Timer", can mask some of the installed Windows Updates from the program. Conversely, Security programs can also prevent updates from installing correctly in the first place.

A manual scan by Windows Updates should tell you what updates, if any, you are missing.

And yes, Belarc Advisor, is a handy program to find out about your machine.

There are so many ins and outs as to what Hotfix should be applied, and which have been deprecated by later fixes, that I would trust only the Microsoft Baseline Security Analysis Tool for this job:
There are some excellent third-party utilities that work as competently as the Microsoft utility. The Shavlik product line is one strong example:
All Belarc can report is failed installations; no clue as to why and whether the hotfix is even required by an individual machine. This is not sufficient information to suggest direct downloads of Hotfixes and applying them yourself.

Hi Enkrypted, Linney and Bcastner,

Thank you all for your replies. I did some further investigating on the "missing" updates/fixes.

I had MS run a check, and they came up with 5 total, as compared with Belarc Advisor's. But, in looking over them, 3 of them don't even apply to my machine Two were for MS Office, which I don't even have installed, and one was for an SQL server.

One was for my MS Word viewer, which was dated 11/10/06, so I wouldn't expect that to be auto updated yet anyway. The last one was for IE 7, which also has probably not made the rounds yet also.

The 3 that Belarc found were for the Word viewer, and 2 for MS Office. So, I'd say that I'm just going to wait for the auto update to hit.

In the list that MS came up with, they offered to do all six. I could see no way to pick and choose, so I skipped that.

In any event, Belarc is still a handy tool to have around. I wanted to know the version number of my install of Roxio Easy Media Crfeator 7. There was no place that I could find that in the program window. It's usually located under HELP>ABOUT, but couldn't find that either. But, of course Belarc showed it
