getting mini dvd onto mac ibook G4

I am looking to import video from a mini dvd onto my mac ibook g4. i know the mini dvd's wont fit into the slide in slot on the side of the g4. but i have also tried this with an external cd/dvd drive. but still the data on the disc will not transferr onto the g4.
either the data is not being recognized in some way, or is a driver required?
the videos are recoreded in dv-r mode on my camcorder.
wether this makes a difference or not?

Without knowing the make of your camcorder, one can only guess at the format the video has been stored as. Can you not just connect the camcorder to the ibook with a firewire cable and pull the video into iMovie/iDVD from the disk?

the camcorder unfortuantly does not have any means of connecting to PC/Mac via firewire or any type of usb.
the only way is to insert disc..
