getting many failed attempts to pop3 from unauth IP's

Let me state that I know we are not as secure as we need to be
and in the near future we will be locking things down.
For the time being, is there a way to limit logon attempts to pop3?

Yes, disable the POP3 service.

Or configure your firewall to block the network ranges known to be in other countries.

No, I can't do that. I do see several attempts to logon from IP's from Russia, china, india etc . I'd like to at least limit the number of attempts these characters can attempt
