I am a graduating senior getting my degree in MIS. I am really interested in the IS auditing and security field. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to get started in that direction? What books, skills, or classes would benefit me? Any input would be appreciated.

Hmmm.

1) Subscription to Network Computing Magazine.
2) See if Network Associates has any newsletters you can sign up for
3) Find out what Dan Farmer is up to (head of security at EarthLink, and author of the COPS and SATAN network security tools).

I just got this free "Guide to Assesing Security" from a new network security company called Camelot. I found this practical guide very helpful.

Fill out the form for a free download. While you're at it you can register for MyCamelot. It's a great newsletter about IT security.

check out Hark!, their network intelligence based security solution.

Good luck!

I am an IT auditor myself and took a somewhat round about route to get here. I would suggest investigating 2 certifications:

CISA-Certified IS Auditor
CISSP-Certified IS Security Professional

While this was not the path I took, they are certifications I am obtaining now and contain extremely useful information.
