Hey guys i got a few questions about Arcserve regarding the backup tapes

What i was wondering if anyone could help me with is:

1. Being able to tell how big a backup operation is going to be BEFORE the job is committed to tape.

and

2. Being able to query a tape when it’s in the system to see the following:

-How much capacity is remaining on a tape (and how much is used, obviously)

-If possible, what sort of backup job was done (incremental, full, etc…) and when

Thanks heaps because ive only just started using Arcserve :)

Hi,
1. I think that is impossible. If you run an incremental job Arcserve can't know which files were changed before the backup starts. It needs to "scan" the files and this happens when the backup runs.
2. After your backup is finished you can view the activity logs to see how much capacity is remaining on a tape. In the activity log you can also view what sort of backup was done, this should be displayed in the activity log around the time when the backup job starts.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,
GSC

1) run a Count job.
2) space remaining on tape is basically useless these days because it is based off native capacity and compression throws that all off.
