I have a client that insisted on imbedding files in a publication. She also used some sort of Word Art with text typed on a path even after being warned not to do so. A few of her pages actually went to press, so she thought she could do that for the rest of the book.

The plant can't distill most of the files to send them to the press, so now I have to make something of this mess.

My question is--if I copy the imbedded photos from PM files and paste them into Photoshop 7, and save them as a TIFF, will I be getting the full resolution of the photos? They need to be 300 dpi, and they already look really grainy from being scanned.

I have already pulled out all the crazy word art, but the files still refuse to Export> Adobe PDF or create a PostScript file from Print. Everytime I try to export to pdf, PM closes down and sends an error report to Microsoft. When I try to Postscript from Print and drop it on Distiller 7, it dumps the job and quits. Here is the error message:

Processing prologue.ps...
Done processing prologue.ps.
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: ÐÏࡱá ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Distill Time: 0 seconds (00:00:00)
**** End of Job ****

I have never seen "ÐÏࡱá" before and don't even know where to begin but to start from scratch with all her files. I am beginning to think the files are corrupted.

Any ideas?

Daniel

Hi, Daniel,

Your only real hope is to get hold of the original image files.

Un-embedding images out of PM is impossible. You really need the original image.

You could try slecting and copying the image into Photoshop or even MS's Photo Editor, but it'll be at screen rez.

If you have the correct version of MSOffice installed you should be able to something with WordArt - like delete it - which may enable you create a PDF, and there's also a possiblity that any images have been embedded at high rez which would give you a good printed page.

To confirm good practice, see: PM - General Graphics Handling Recommendations

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: ÐÏࡱá ]%%
"The following offending commands indicate a problem with any element or graphic:
-- [random characters] "
which you already knew…

See: Troubleshoot PostScript errors

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

John,

You confirm my fears. I tried copying a few photos from the publication. Two of them looked pretty good and must have originally been of sufficient size, but two others were horribly pixelated or fuzzy when I increased the image size to 300 dpi.

I have already contacted the client to get all the photos on a CD. That should be fun. Knowing yearbook staffs from the past, it is certain that some of the photos are long gone! So much for proper work flow.

John,

Here is a puzzler. I brought the bad files to work and tried to print on my Xerox 2025 wide format printer -- no dice. They just wouldn't print. Then I tried printing to my team mate's HP 4100 and Bingo!

I'm not sure the different. My PPD's kept trying to create a postscript file before sending it to the printer, but the other job just went directly to the printer. I tried different combos in the print box, but all turned out the same.

My printer is not networked; it has a USB connection.

Mmmmmm. Strange.

Daniel

Weird. We have a networked LBJ 4100, but it's so temperamental I was expecting you say your PM file didn't print and it printed on the Xerox.

I wonder if you have a different PS driver - I think the HP 4100 has its own if the driver is installed fron HP's own CD.
