I'm trying to fix an old dentist office computer, IBM PC running SCO Unix V386, Release 3.2V4.2. I keep getting an error "/etc/getty/tty2a n (date) PID XXX: cannot open line tty2a:
"/etc/getty/tty2a n (date) PID XXX: no such file or directory (error 2)"
Also "/etc/getty/tty2a n (date) PID XXX: no such device or address (error 6)"
The file tty2a was missing so I copied tty1a to tty2a but that didn't help. The error messages just keep repeating on the screen. How can I get rid of these errors?
Thanks

first , take the tty2a file away. You created a file where a block device belongs.
Then look at the top of /usr/adm/messages for the hardware configuration to see if serial port 1 is listed. Then look at the end of the same file for the last entry, (last reboot) to see if it is listed there. Think serial list as serial0 and serial1 there.
Then look in /etc/inittab to see if the port is listed. Which it should be. Think your serial port got clobbered. And the first fix try is to remove the entry in /etc/inittab and the same entry in /etc/conf/init.d/sio. Reboot the system and see if that fixes it.
If you need the port then get the serial port repaired and then mkdev serial to add com2.
