We have a new client who would like to connect their legacy DOS database to an e-commerce website, which currently uses JSP & MySQL to deliver pages. As an owner of our city's largest bookstore, they have a sizeable staff (15+ employees), and have thus no real desire to upgrade their DOS-powered POS (Point of Sale) system to a Windows or Linux-based model because of implementation costs, employee training and several other reasons.

The current method of communication is through this method:

1) Store inventory resides in DOS database.
2) Employee saves DOS records as a file that Access can read.
3) Export tables from Access to .csv file.
4) Upload .csv file to MySQL database.

The client figures the problem is that because the data has to pass through so many channels, it does not show properly on the website, and thus errors are thrown when searching for ISBN's, Author Titles, Book Titles, etc. I believe it may come down to poor data entry at the start also...

So what we'd like to propose is an DOS-XML-MySQL model, where the inventories between the two databases are kept consistent, and are automatically updated in real-time. Is this possible, or is it not, becaus the DOS database is not web-enabled? They do, or can have, an always-on, broadband internet connection on the server that hosts the DOS database.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this task? We are comfortable using PHP, MySQL and XML.

thanks in advance
