Getting details of wireless computers 1

Hi,

I have a wireless access point attached to my router, and have had no security set up on it as there was never anyone else connecting to it. That was until the other day when I noticed loads of activity. Did a net view and saw a new computer on it. Tried to pink it but it said the host couldn't be found.

It showed up in workgroup in Winxp, but again if I tried to access the computer absolutely nothing, windows said it didn't exist on teh network.

Anyway, I have now secured my network so I won't have any more unexpected visitors stealing my bandwidth (and probably a rather disgruntled 14yr old not able to download from me any more).

Is there anyway that I can get the info of who was connecting through me?

Thanks,

Richard

AirSnare will show you the MAC, IP, and computer name for computers connected to your wireless.

Ethereal will show ethernet activity and some packet content.

Neither will tell you who the network belongs to unless their network name is "the Smiths" or computer name is "George", and you know George Smith lives across the street.

Thanks Frank,

Looks interesting. I'll certainly have a look.

Now i've put the security on there is no problem anyway, but it'll be useful for the future.

yeah that stuff is only going to help if they connect again...

now don't you feel silly for not having security turned on in the first place?

You cant really be angry at the kid if you built the nice big in-ground pool and never built the fence to secure it.

Nah, I'm not particularly angry. Once I'd found the other connection I closed right up. Yes it was silly of me not to have secured it before - not actually sure why I didn't!
