This is probably a very stupid question in this forum of experts.

However - we have inherited a couple of old M3820's from another company.

When I try to plug them into an ordinary phone plug, they do flash on, but they do not seem to work. I do not get any clear tone when I lift the handset. None of the buttons seem to work.

What is wrong?

you will need to check what these are connected to....

trace the cabling back - if it's a digital set then the TN is probabily disabled/misconfigured

if it's wired up to a analogue TN then you will need to move the wiring to a digital set.

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

mikeyb is correct, print off the TN and have a look and see what the programming is. Type should be a 2616, check to see the is 2008, etc.

I have had it connected to both analog and digital lines without any success.

How do I print off the TN? (excuse my low level of knowledge)

Thanks,
Claus

did you trace the cabling back to the mdf?

was there anything connected?

I am sorry but how do I connect it to a computer so I can carry out the above commands? And do I need special software?

Thanks
Claus

Hyper Terminal, serial connection to com port on the Nortel, 9600,

Hope this helps Killian

Is the Nortel's com port the long narrow one or the standard network plug port?

I cannot find a plug on the Nortel that looks similar to the serial port on the PC.

Thanks,
Claus

if your in a an opt 11, their is a cable on the inter self with 3 tails, they look like a printer port on your pc, their not, the one marked port 0 is programed fromthe factory for a term.. the switch setting on the front of the SSC card (1st card) sets the speed, the other setting are 8 bits, no parity and 1 stop bit, your comm software may labe that as 8,n,1 at 9600 (the normal term speed) good luck and repost with additional questions.. remember we all started knowing the same exact amount.. some of us started 4 decades ago, others will start tomorrow.. i have a grand son that is almost as fast as me..
