Getting Active Directory and older versions of Samba to play nice

Good morning everyone,

The network I've inherited is running Samba 2.0.9 along with Active Directory on Windows 2000.

About a day after I arrived here, the Samba shares stopped working. The solution was to manually change the users samba password to match their Windows password. Now that the company has mandated 30 day password rotation, there isn't a day that goes by that I'm not changing one or more samba passwords. I know that windbindd does this automatically, but its also not avalable on this version of Samba.

Without upgrading, does anyone know how I can get the AD passwords and the samba passwords back in synch?
