Getting a problem opening a database

When I try to open a database on a client machine I get H:\data1\test.mdb isn't a valid path. It can see the file, but it can't open the database. It opens up fine on the server where the file is located, but after we mapped the network drives the have the clients access the file it gets an error. We did link tables. That might be the problem.

Please help??

Thanks

Relink the tables in the new environment, using a path that will be available to all your users.

Thanks Jeremy

What would you suggest is the best way about going about the relinking in the new environment? Should we unlink the tables and then go to a client machine open the db and then link the tables?

Thank you in advance.

One thing that you may want to make sure of is that the proper rights have been associated to the user. For instance, if you had a user with restricted access but used that user when doing a compact and repair you will find that later on when other users try to use the shortcut it won't work.

mrMika

How do you think we should go about doing this?

Thanks

MrMika,

This is _not_ the case. You can compact with any user, and it will not affect whether or not the shortcut works.

SandingDude,

That's a fine way to do it. It's best if you have enough control over the environment that you can make sure that all users will always have the same network drive mappings. Then you can map the drive on everyone's machine (hopefully in a script that your admin will put together) and link through that mapped drive. If you can't do that, go through the My Network Places, so that you make sure you are using a UNC path, which will start with \\theNameOfYourServer.

sandingdude,

what operating system does the computer that has the mdb that you are trying to open have?

Jeremy,
FYI. I have a multiuser client mdb that resides on a xp home edition. If the user does not log in as a computer administrator when doing a compact and repair the other pc's shortcuts will not work. It may just be a xp home thing?

Guys your never going to believe this. The Win XP on the client machines had the firewall turned on. Thats where the error was coming from.

Thanks for all your help.
