Getting a dredded 89ff error

I am having this ongoing problem that I can not for the life of me pinpoint. I would be very greatful for any input!

Here goes, getting the following error:

The following drive mapping operation could not be completed
[I:server/vol1:]
89ff

We are in an IP only environment. Once logged in, I do a release all, then renew all on a win98 pc, the novell client login (client 32 3.31)comes up, I log in and get my mappings fine. This is just select PCs in our organization.

Any clues?

Do you have your servers listed on your DNS server? Can you ping your server name and does it resolve? We had a similar problem when one of our servers did not have a listing in the DNS.
The server needs to be listed as "server" not "server.domain.com".

Thanks for the input. We are using WINS for name resolution. We do not have a DNS server. We are in a mixed environment.

Ah... WINS, sorry never used that. But does it not have a list of servers and addresses in it? Should be the same deal.
