I am slowly realising that a firewall installed on the PC is a sensible precaution. However I am new to the use of one and would appreciate a pointer to get started.

I have browsed CNET and see that SYGATE and TINY have a couple of free Firewalls to download, but are these worth the time?

Can anyone advise or make a recommendation?

Many Thanks

Check out Steve Gibson recommends a couple, I think ZoneAlarm from is the easiest to use, and free. The Tiny Personal Firewall is the next best, also free. Cheers,

I installed ZoneAlarm about a month ago and it could have been any easier. It's very simple to configure and use. I highly recommend it. I have been amazed at the number of times attempts have been made to access my PC in the last month, that ZoneAlarm prevented. I had no idea.

If you are on the internet for any length of time you need a firewall.

Definitely get a firewall. There are too many sad geeks out there with nothing better to do than search for open ports... I installed ZoneAlarm too - also amazed how many attempts were mad at my machine (sometimes running into hundreds).

I have been using BlackIce Defender for about 8 months with my DSL connection and it is GREAT. Very easy to use & configure. Thought for the day: Beware of Gods who cannot laugh...

Please use Zonealarm. It's excellent. It works fine and causes no problems and is very easy to set up. Peter Meachem
