I'm using Extra Personal Client 6.71. I'm trying to copy a screen of information and paste it in Notepad. When I use Captur32 (supplied with Extra, so you'd think it would work), and paste into Notepad I get
ãÈÉâ@âÃÙÅÅÕz ÂÉÕØ nnn @nnnn@@ÂÉÓÓ@ÉÕØäÉÙè@LLLL@ LLL @@×Çz ðñ @ÄÁãÅz ðùaðùaðõ
ÕÅçã@âÃÙÅÅÕz mmmm ÃÖÔ×ÁÕèz ð @@@ãÅÙÔÉÕÁÓz ÈÂÇ@ ãÉÔÅz òðzóøzñù
×ÙÖ@{ mmmmmmmmmm mm Øz ò ÂÓz mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ×Öz mmmmmmmmmmmm ÁÓÓz m åÅÙz m
etc.
Each of the characters corresponds to a unique number. For example, B is alway â (HEX 00E2 on the unicode page). Furthermore, if I paste â into the field and captur32 it, it will come out as a B, so it is a one-to-one correspondence.

Do I have some setting marked that I don't know about?

I'd suggest you look at this FAQ. You'll want to use the GetString method to get data from the screen. If you really need to capture a full screen, there are ways to do it, but I've never found it necessary.

I'm ready for Extra Basic... now what? faq99-4087

I didn't read all your FAQ but I had a similar problem and tried get string. It displayed the same gunk. I called Attachmate and they informed me it was a bug and referred me to some update. Perhaps call Attachmate to find out.
