Gets the VPN gateway address after conneting to the VPN network .

I have a laptop and connect to internet using SBC yahoo
DSL, and during this connection when I check whatismyip.com
it shows the SBC gateway address. So any browsing is done
using this address.

NOw sometimes when I connect to remote office location
using my VPN and when I check my laptops whatismyip.com
it shows the remote VPN ip address. Does that mean
i am using that gateway address for the internet access
after connecting to the VPN.

How can secure this? wanted to make sure as not to use
the VPN gateway for any browsing ?

Yes. This is by design for the security reason and that is good. The VPN server only trusts it gateway. If someone connects to the VPN server and still accesses the internet using it's gateway, a hacker may get into the VPN via the client.
