get phone mac address

does anyone know a way to let a wap-website determine a phone's MAC address or at least have a way to uniquely identify the phone?

To the best of my knowledge, PHP does not have builtin functionality to do that. However, most, if not all, OSes on which PHP can run will have an [tt]arp[/tt] command that will, when passed an IP address, return a MAC address. You'll have to execute the [tt]arp[/tt] command externally to PHP.


Keep in mind, though, that MAC addresses will only be available for network entities on you LAN. If the connecting device crossed a router, the MAC adress of the device will not be available.

I see. the reason I ask is that I am writing a program where you log into a website with your phone. However, logging in is a little cumbersome with a phone's keypad, so I want to figure out a quicker, more efficient way to allow access to a particular phone. any ideas?

quite a lot of phones accept cookies now.

from memory some wap gateways also provide an x-sub-number (essentially a gateway identifier) in the request header. but then not all networks make use of wap gateways anymore.
