Hi Internet Explorer experts,

Once upon a time.... I had IE 5.5 with 128-bit encryption and life was good.

Then I installed IE version 6 and things aren't so good anymore. Most of the web sites I try to view give the error we've all seen at least a few times: "The page cannot be displayed. Cannot find server or DNServer"

Rebooting sometimes eliminates the problems for awhile, but then it always comes back.

Again, I have IE 6 (no service pack) running on Windows 2000 SP 2.

Is there a setting in my Internet Options that might cause this ... or..?

Thanks for any tips. John

Thanks gargouille,

I uninstalled IE 6 and went back to IE 5.5 SP2.

Here's something interesting....

When I connect with my dial-up connection (Bellsouth), I don't get the 'Page Cannot be Displayed' error.

But when I use my broadband connection (cable modem) I get 'Page cannot be displayed' for every web site I attempt to visit !

I was thinking the problem was IE 6... but after going back to IE 5.5 still have the problem.....

Anyone know why I get this error when I connect with my cable modem ?

Thanks, John

My first question would be is it really a DNS issue? Open a command prompt and ping the dns address for a web site and get the IP address. Enter the IP address in the address field in the browser and see if it can pull the web page by IP address.

If yes then it is a DNS issue and you may need to configure a DNS server for your cable modem ISP. joegz

First try joegz's suggestion. If that doesn't work, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections and click the "Setup..." button. Then do the following:

1) Choose the third option, which deals with connecting through a LAN and hit NEXT

2) Choose "connect through a LAN" on the next screen and hit NEXT

3) Leave everything unchecked (all 3 checkboxes) and hit NEXT

4) Choose 'No' when prompted to setup an Internet Mail Account and hit NEXT

5) Click Finish, close & reopen IE.

Also make sure you don't have "Automatically Detect Settings" checked under LAN Settings

I have a similar problem, but have tried all those "cures" to no avail. IE6 SP1, Win 200 Pro, and a DLink router behind a
cable modem just wonlt work together. But the problem is definately with IE, because Netscape 7.0, Opera 7, and Mozilla fly with no problems! I got a hit of a known problem with IE 6 SP1 concerning security defaults and working with limited devices, such as routers, but I didn't print or save the link to the article, tried going on to some other articles that were suggested, and found that the steps they proposed did not work.

I find that a lot of people seem to be having trouble with IE 6 and Win 2000 or Win 2000 Pro. I've yet to find anyone what has a cure. And unfortunately, there are sites that require IE to display or work properly. For some of those sites, you might try Opera 7, since it has a setting that allows it to "mimic" a different browser. Unfortunately, this mimicing is not good enough to fool the automatic windows update into working properly.

Also, though JohnBates problem sounds like something other than IE, he should have ran IE up to SP1...there are many reasons why that Service Pack is out there.

hi folks...

My problem turned out to be a faulty connection when I used my cable modem.

Thanks for all your replys, John

I got the recent update of AVG 6.0, ran it, and found 29
instances of unwanted software on my system. Upon removing
all those, I could no longer initiate the Winsock2 socket
software. I took a clean partiton and installed another
copy of Win2kPro on it, and that copy of IE works find with
the cable modem (has not been updated to SP1 yet, That will
come later). I expored/imported the winsock2 key from that register to my troubled install, and that restored sockets for my other browsers, but IE with SP1 on that partition will still not connect to the network. It's real late, and I will have to take this up later. I'm thinking of exporting both registers and writing a program to try and match up the differences for the keys that they have in common, and see if I can see some way to make the two jell together.
